Joe York : Would this be a good time for a small U.S. business in the technical service industry to establish a limited liability company in order to do business in Egypt? Why (or why not)?

Amer Kayani: Dear Joe - Thank you for your question. It depends on the sector for which you are interested in providing technical services. The economy in Egypt has been doing very well (7% annual growth!) and significant opportunities exist in Egypt. Amer Kayani: Naaman - Thank you for your question. Trade barriers in the MENA region vary from country to country. Like most regions around the world, American companies continue to face non-tariff barriers such as discrminatory standards and IPR violations in the MENA region. However, at the same time several thousand American companies are doing successful business in the MENA region. The key is to be patient and havea good business partner to help you navigate the local business scene.

هل هذا النظام متبع في امريكا كما يقول العميل وهل هناك اي ضمانات لنا ان فعلنا ذلك بموجب شيك من العميل هل هذا الشيك يضمن حقنا وهل سمعة هذا العميل واضحة بالنسبة لكم

دائما ننصح الشركات الأمريكية و المصرية استخدام خطاب اعتماد غير مرجوع فيه لضمان سداد القيمة أو عن طريق الدفع المقدم.
فى حالة حصولك على شيك من العميل وقمت بصرفه فإنك بهذه الطريقة تضمن حق الشركة.

Kevin : What can the Embassy do to help Egypt promote renewable energy?

Amer Kayani: Thank you, Kevin- your question is very timely. As Egypt moves to diversify its energy sources, renewable energy sector would present excellent opportunities. The U.S. Embassy is working closely with the Government of Egypt in this area. Earlier this year, we organized a trade mission from Egypt to the Renewable Energy Trade Show in Las Vegas. At this show, Egyptian entrepreneurs met with their American counterparts and we hope to build on more of such activities to promote the renewable energy sector in Egypt.

Amer Kayani: Thank you for your question Hossam. If you are referring to contemporary art, you can either shop online or visit an art gallery in the States. There are many art galleries, but for contemporary art, larger cities like Boston, Chicago, and New York (especially areas like Greenwich Village or SoHo where there are many young artists) are the best. You should also register with the Commercial Service where we keep records of U.S. businesses and their representatives in the country. We have events covering the education sector and we will be happy to invite you. We also print a publication called the Business Directory of U.S. companies in Egypt and will be happy to have you listed in our next edition.

My first question, In what way can we make the role of the civil society/NGOs getting better in the commercial cooperation in between the US and Egypt to solve problems such joblessness and poverty?

How could we as NGOs getting credits from the US to re-credit for poor people to start micro-business?

Can the American side help us in affecting the training on feasibility topics because we have shorts in that field? if yes, how?

How could you cooperate with the local chambers of commerce like (Alexandria Chamber of Commerce) to enhance the bi-national trade/commerce?

Amer Kayani: Ahmed, thank you very much for your questions. We already have active cooperation with the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt, the Egyptian Businessmen Association, and the Junior Businessmen Association.The USAID is expanding its current micro finance program in Egypt. It is helping poor and low-income households become an integrated part of the financial system through a borrowing system. It is planned that the USAID Microfinance supported program target for 2007 is one billion Egyptian pounds serving about 700,000 active borrowers, out of which more than 75% will be poor female heads of households located in Egypt’s economically disadvantaged areas.

For instance, last year our two nations traded more than $6.5 billion in goods and services. The U.S. President has stated his desire to have a Middle East Free Trade Area by 2013. hany Zaki : بما ان الولايات المتحده الأمريكيه هى القوى العظمى الأقتصاديه الأولى فهل من الممكن انت تشمل برامج مساعداتها نوعية المشروعات الصغيره التى تفيد فى التواصل بين بسطاء الشعب المصرى لتجعل لها ارضيه على المستوى الشعبى والتى الآن وصلت إلى درجه ليست جيده لأن بمصر اعلام معادى يذكر الولايات المتحده كل يوم وكل ساعه بطريقه مباشره أو غير مباشره بنحو يسىء إلى الولايات المتحده و يسىء للحلم الأمريكى

للأسف ان مشاريع كثيرة للحكومة الأمريكية لا يتم التنويه عنها. معظم برامج المعونة الإقتصادية تم تصميمها لمساعدة المشاريع الصغيرة، تحسين الرعاية الصحية، بناء البنية الأساسية اللازمة، توقير ماء نظيف، تحسين نظام التعليم فى مصر. مثلا فقط هذا العام مشاريع المعونة الأمريكية لصغار المستثمرين ستقوم بتمويل ما يقرب من واحد مليار جنيه لمساعدة 700,000 مقترض و 75% منها سيدات بسطاء.
