Congratulations to Egypt for their exciting win of the African Cup last night - what a match! I am here today with my colleague Jim Peterson, the MEPI Coordinator here at the Embassy, to answer your questions. If you have a specific question for either me or Jim, please ask us by name in your question. We will be chatting about both the MEPI Summer Leaders Institutes and the NESA Undergraduate Scholarship Program. They are both excellent merit-based programs, but are quite different. Ahmed Aly : Dear Christy, I feel that there is no fairness in such programs, because I see that you accept boys and girls who really can afford the cost of such travels, although I think you should accept low/normal class boys and girls. I am saying it, I am a pretty poor boy. Is there any chance for me to be accepted in such programs, because I am from the low class, and poor; Or you might accept me regardless my social class? Cheers! ;) |
| Christine Meyer: Hi Ahmed, Thank you for your question. Both programs are merit-based programs. What this means is that we look at grades, community activities, recommendations - things like that. We don't look at social class. All programs pay for travel and living costs. The only thing that participants need is pocket money, if they choose. |

Youmna : Hey! Thank u for trying to help us out and answering our inquiries ! I am a freshman student studying in the arab academy for science and technology and I am to apply for two scholarships : 1- NESA 2- MEPI However I do have some problems providing the following documents : 1- A copy of my passport as I was robbed recently and I lost my ID card so I have 3 weeks from now to earn both my ID and passport so I wont be able to provide it to both scholarships 2- My TOEFEL scores too wont be there before the deadline of NESA scholarship yet I can provide my ELPET score exam that I took at the AUC 3 months ago, would that be possible ? | Christine Meyer: Hi Youmna, Thank you for your questions. My goodness! I hope that you are ok and that the robber didn't get anything else. Passport copies are not required, but we do need a copy of some form of ID. Maybe you have a club card or school ID that you can use instead. AMIDEAST added two TOEFL dates, they are Feb 17 and Feb 19 at 9:00. The scores will be available in time for the application due date. Best of luck! |

It offers participants a chance to experience student life in the U.S. participants live in dorms, with American students, take classes and interact in the community. Some programs are 1 semester and others are 1 year long. It is a great opportunity. I hope that gives you a bit more info. Thanks! |

abdallah yassin : بعد التحية: انه ليسعدنى حقا ان اتشرف بحضور مثل هذه المناقشة الجيدة و التى تمكن المشتركين فى اى من المنح التبادلية من الاطمأنان و الاستفسار عما قد يثير القلق. ولذلك فاننى اتمنى حقا من سيادتكم افادتنى باجابات لبعض الاسئلة التى تثير قلقى حقا: 1-هل ستتم الدراسة بالجامعات الامريكية ام ببعض المعاهد الفرعية؟ 2-ماذا عن المادة العلمية التى سيتلقاها الطالب.هل سيتم توجيه الطالب للدراسة بنفس المجال العلمى الذى يدرس به حاليا؟ 3-هل سيتم التركيز على افادة الطالب واكسابه المزيد من المعرفة بتخصصه العلمى كى يتمكن من الستفادة بها لاحقاام سيتم الاهتمام بالانشطة الاجتماعية والترفيهية؟ 4-هل سيتم افادة الطالب بعد اتمامه للفترة الدراسية بشهادة معتمدة من الجهة المضيفة تثبت المهارات والخبرة التى قد يكتسبهما الطالب فى هذه الفترة؟ 5-بصفتى طالبا بكلية العلوم واتطلع لاستكمال دراستى بالبحث العلمى والاكتشاف.هل سيحق لى ان اتناقش مع السادة الاساتذة بالجامعة المضيفة واتمكن من اجراء بعض التجارب داخل المعامل البحثية؟ 6-فى حالة ايجاد منحة دراسية او مصدر للدخل بالولايات المتحدة,هل يحق لى ان استكمل دراستى بنفس مجالى العلمى بالولايات المتحدة بعد انتهاء البرنامج ام لا؟ 7-هل سيتم حرمان الطلبة المشاركين من السفر للولايات المتحدة بعد انتهاء البرنامج؟وان كانت الاجابة نعم فكم ستكون الفترة الزمنية؟ و اخيرا اريد حقا الاعتزار لكثرة الاسئلة ولكننى حقا بحاجة ماسة لهذه الاجابات حتى اتجه للاتجاه الصحيح فانا اخشى اهدار عام كامل من عمرى خاصة و اننى كما ابلغت سيادتكم سابقا اننى ارغب فى اكمال مسيرتى بالبحث العلمى بعد الدراسة وهذا يتطلب الكثير من الوقت. مع خالص شكرى و تحياتى لسيادتكم واكرر اعتزارى ثانية لكثرة الاسئلة. |
| Christine Meyer: شكرا لأسئلتك وهذه بعض الإيجابات عليها. تتاح الدراسة عامة فى المعاهد الأمريكية للتعليم العالي وهو ما يغطى الجامعات و الكليات وفى بعض الأحيان المعاهد الإقليمية.وفى العام الماضي تم قيول الطلبة فى الكليات والجامعات العليا. على عكس النظام فى مصر وفي معظم أوروبا تعتبر الجامعات والمعاهد فى الولايات المتحدة متساوية، ويدرس الطلبة فى نفس مجال دراستهم ولكن يجب مراعاة ان المواد الدراسية ممكن ان تختلف عن تلك المتاحة فى مصر. فعلى المشتركين دراسة " الدراسات الأمريكية" اولا، ثم المادة الأساسية المتعلقة بمجال تخصصهم. أما بخصوص البحث العلمي فهذا شيئ ربما تريد ان تسأل فيه بعد قبولك فى البرنامج. |

Magdy Wageeh : In Near East and South Asia Program, is the TOEFL score is required? Can I apply to this program without have the TOEFL? (the main reason I am asking this question is that there is no enough time to take it, because I have to register for it a month before the exam date, and I will get the score within two weeks after the exam, this means I need about 6 weeks, & of course I do not have that time :S) |
| Christine Meyer: Hello Magdy. I hope your studies this semester are going well. TOEFL scores are required for this program. AMIDEAST has added a couple of TOEFL sessions - one of Feb 17 and one on Feb 19. Both sessions are at 9:00 AM. Please call Sunday and Thursday 8 - 6 PM, Monday - Wednesday 8 - 8 to make an appointment. Scores will be available in time for the due date. Their address is 23 Mossadouk Street, Dokki. |

محمد عباس : أولاً أتوجه بخالص الشكر إليكي/ الأستاذة كريستين ماير على اهتمامك ووقتك وقد شاركت معك من قبل وتحققت الاستفادة أنا طالب بالفرقة الرابعة بكلية التربية / قسم اللغة الانجليزية وأود الاستفسار عن الاعداد لامتحان التوفل الدولي وما الفرق بينه وبين التوفل المحلي وما هي الدرجة الكلية في التوفل وما هي الدرجة المطلوبة كي أستطيع الدراسة في جامعات أمريكا وأخيراً ما هي فرص السفر إلى الولايات المتحدة وقد رشحت من قبل لمؤتمر مبادرة الشرق الأوسط ولكن لظروف ما لم أستطع السفر ولو بالإمكان إعلامي من خلال الاميل بأي مؤتمر أو منح دراسية يمكن أن أشارك فيها في الولايات المتحدة ولكم جزيل الشكر |

Mohamed : A few weeks a go I had asked a question in regards to finances for small entrepeneurs and a social program that would allow indigent or low resource families access to medical and prescription program. | James Peterson: Hi Mohamed, I am not sure who you directed your original request to, but one of the MEPI pillars deals with economic reform which includes small grants for entrepreneur programs; as well as training for qualified applicants who are selected through an interview process. These are annual programs and more information can be obtained through the MEPI web site at www.mepi.state.gov. Currently MEPI does not have a program specifically to fund medical and prescription expenses. |

| Christine Meyer: شكرا على سؤالك، تقدم هذه المنح من قبل وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية و السفارة هى جزء منها. منحة الطلاب الشرق الأدنى وجنوب آسيا متاحة فى مختلف المجالات. وتختلف المصروفات الدراسية فى الجامعات والمعاهد الأمريكية بين مكان وآخر وهذا يعتمد على ميزانية المتقدم. المنح متاحة بشكل عام ولكن عليك ان تبذل بعض المجهود للبحث عن أفضل ما يناسبك. وحظا سعيدا فى دراستك. |

| Christine Meyer: Hello Amr, I think that you are talking about the NESA program. You do not need a nomination from a professor for the program. What you do need are references. Of the three, one should be from your secondary school, but the other two can be from professors, or bosses, etc. By "official transcripts" we mean that we need an official certificate from your university that says what your marks were for each year. If you haven't started university yet, don't worry! We just need your marks from secondary school. |

| Christine Meyer: شكرا على سؤالك، يسعدنى انك تعمل على تحسين درجاتك هذا العام وأتمنى ان تنجح. يعتمد هذان البرنامجان على أدائك وهو ما يعنى اننا ننظر الى عدة عوامل، فمثلا الدرجات مهمة ولكن أيضا الخدمة الإجتماعية وخطابات التوصية ومهاراتك فى اللغة الإنجليزية الخ. وحظا سعيدا. |

| James Peterson: Hi Ahmed, The number of students accepted in MEPI programs will vary among specific educational programs. Some are relatively short term while others may be for a full 4-5 year undergraduate program. Since its inception, about 200 Egyptians have participated in different MEPI programs. |

| Christine Meyer: كل شخص يستفيد من المشاركة فى برامج التبادل. فبعض ممن عادوا من هذه البرامج كونوا صداقات جديدة وغيرهم استفادوا بتغير وجهة نظرهم عن الولايات المتحدة وبالنسبة للبعض الآخر تعلموا أشياء جديدة فى مجال تخصصم ستساعدهم مع الإنتهاء من دراستهم. وإذا كنت تسأل عما انا أستفيده فأنا أقول لك ان استفادتى واستفادة الشعب الأمريكي الذي يقابلهم المشتركون هو اننا جميعا نتعرف على بعضنا البعض بطريقة أفضل ونتيقن اننا بالرغم من أننا نعيش فى أماكن مختلفة ونأكل طعاما مختلفا الا أننا في الحقيقة او فى الواقع نتشارك فى نفس الأفكار والقيم.

| Christine Meyer: Hi Youmna! It might not be on their website yet, because they just added it yesterday. Try giving them a call - their number is 19263. The extra sessions are for Cairo location only. |

| Christine Meyer: Hi Amr - Don't worry about the passport. Please include a copy of some other ID card. The MEPI program requires two recommendations, whereas the NESA one requires three. Good luck! |

sara : hello i wanna ask about the criteria of choosing MEPI students ? what if i have low or average grades but great community activities or good english or done well at the interview? and vice versa btw can you tell us some info about the interview and one last thing can i know how many students will be chosen? sorry if asked too many :) kind regards |
| Christine Meyer: Hello Sara, The selection committee looks at many factors. Grades are important, but community service is important as well. We realize that leaders come in all shapes and sizes so we do not look the complete applicant. Good luck! |

| Christine Meyer: Hello Monzer, I hope that classes are going well. There are many opportunities to study in the U.S. AMIDEAST has lots of resources for students. I would suggest starting with them. Also, Fulbright offers programs, but I do not think that they currently offer Pharmacy programs. Good luck! |

| Christine Meyer: Hi Mariam, Currently, the U.S. Department of State has the Near East and South Asia Undergraduate Scholarship program. This is a great opportunity for university students who are active in their community. The due date for applications is Feb 21 and the application is on the Embassy website. Some of the NESA programs are 1 semester, and others are 1 year. |

| James Peterson: MEPI هي مبادرة للمشاركة الشرق أوسطية وهي برنامج من قبل وزارة الخارجية الأمريكية يشمل أربع أنشطة أساسية احداهم تتعلق بتدريب صغار رجال الأعمال المصريين. جمعية خريجي برنامج MEPI المصريين يقدم من خلال هيئة أمدايست فرصة للتواصل وتبادل الأفكار بين رجال الأعمال المصريين الذين تخرجوا من برنامج MEPI |

| Christine Meyer: Hi Mahmoud, Medical schools in the U.S. are different than medical schools here in Egypt. For example, in the U.S., one goes to university for a degree in science or maybe pre-med. Then, after graduation they attend medical school. Medical students can apply for the NESA program, but they would benefit more earlier in their studies rather than later. Best of luck! |

mohamed sakr : احب ان اشكر سفارة الولايات المتحدة علي اتاحة هذا الحوار بينكم وبين الشعب المصري وارجوا ان تسمتر هذة الحوارات سؤالي انني قد اشتركت في العديد من المنح المقدمة منكم الي الشباب المصري ولكن لم يصبني الدور لان الشروط التي تضعونها صعبة جدا واخر هذة المنح التي تقدموها الي طلبة الجامعات ولكنكم استثنيتم طلابة الجامعة المفتوحة لماذا هذا التعقيد ارجوا ان تسمتر هذة المنح من خلال برامج مستمرة لا ان تكون منح لفترة قصيرة وشكراا جزيلا |

Amr Mohy : I read about the 2008 Middle East Partnership Initiative Student Leaders Institutes Program on the site and when i downloaded the application i found that i need to provide a professor name as a reference.Is that a necessity?Actually nobody nominated me to that program i just read about it by chance.Another thing that i don't have a passport because i have never travelled before so i can't provide a transcript for it in the application.I'm really interested in the program and i hope to gain such experience and i hope that i clarified my points enough. |

| Christine Meyer: Hello Gamal and Mahmoud, The NESA program is in a variety of fields, including computer science. In addition, there is a USAID project, that the Fulbright Commission runs, for training in Computer Science. All of these exchange programs offer great opportunities to meet Americans - and for Americans to meet Egyptians too. We have a lot to learn from each other! |

| James Peterson: Hi Romany, You may want to go to visit the American Society of Civil Engineers at http://www.asce.org to obtain information about the civil engineering career in the United States. You can also look at the websites of universities. They will have information from their engineering departments, which will include course requirements. Good luck! |
