U. S. State Dept statement re Egypt, April 9, 2011

We have seen the disturbing reports of the use of excessive force overnight in Tahrir Square and are looking into the situation.  We urge the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to conduct a thorough and timely investigation. 

We have said repeatedly that people everywhere, including in Egypt, must have the universal rights of assembly and protest.  With these rights comes the responsibility not to engage in or provoke violence.
