Consular Services Update Announcement
March 1 2011
Due to security concerns, all visa services at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo are suspended until further notice. The Embassy regrets any inconvenience this temporary suspension may cause for persons wishing to visit or immigrate to the United States. The Embassy will resume visa operations as circumstances permit. Non-immigrant and immigrant visa applications of persons interviewed through January 27, 2011 are being processed normally. Applicants in this category with pending cases should check the Embassy’s website at http://cairo.usembassy.gov for information on the status of their cases. All visas issued are returned to applicants via DHL courier service. Delivery status may be tracked at http://www.dhlegypt.com.en/html .
Applicants who need to travel to the United States before resumption of full visa services in Cairo may apply for a non-immigrant visa at any U.S. embassy or consulate outside Egypt. Information on the requirements and the locations of U.S. embassies and consulates is available at http://travel.state.gov. The non-refundable MRV application fee must be paid in the country of application, according to procedures established by each U.S. embassy. The receipts for MRV fees paid to CIB Bank in Egypt are only valid at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. CIB visa application fee receipts are valid for one year.
The Embassy plans to resume limited processing of immigrant visas (IV) for the spouses and children of U.S. citizens soon. We will contact applicants in these categories with previously scheduled interviews for rescheduling. Immigrant visa applicants who have not yet been interviewed by a consular officer may request another U.S. Embassy to accept their immigrant visa case for processing. Any request must be sent directly to the Immigrant Visa Section of the relevant embassy. Information on which U.S. embassies and consulates process immigrant visas is available at http://travel.state.gov. Immigrant visa fees which have been paid to the U.S. Embassy Cairo or to the National Visa Center in the United States are valid for visa processing at another U.S. Embassy. Diversity Visa (DV) 2011 applicants who had interviews scheduled at U.S. Embassy Cairo from January 30-March 31, 2011 will be contacted by the Cairo Immigrant Visa Section to have their interviews rescheduled. Other DV 2011 applicants who expected to be interviewed in Cairo from April –September 2011 should monitor the U.S. Department of State website at http://travel.state.gov for future information on rescheduling interviews.
The American Citizens Services Unit at Embassy Cairo is currently open for emergency services to U.S. citizens from 9:00 am-12:00 noon each work day Sunday-Thursday. Security conditions permitting, the Embassy anticipates returning to scheduled appointments for non-emergency services in the near future. Americans should monitor the Embassy website for updates. Americans can send questions by e-mail to ConsularCairo@state.gov
The Embassy appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation as consular service hours are adapted as necessary to ensure the full safety of consular clients and Embassy staff.
