U.S.-Egyptian Big Read Initiative Launched at Cairo Book Fair.

Thank you very much. On behalf of the American Embassy, I’m delighted to be here today and I am delighted to be here with my colleagues from the State Department Alina Romanowski and also with our very honored guest, the Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Mr. Dana Gioia.
Today we’re launching a terrific initiative called the Big Read in which the United States Government and Dar Shourouk Publishing are putting forces together to make American books available to Egyptian readers in Arabic which we hope you will enjoy and treasure the same way we do. At the same time, we are working to introduce Egyptian books to American readers who will also treasure and value this important contribution to world culture. So Dr. Moalam, thank you so much for what you have done to make this a success. We’re so honored to be here. I’m going to be your partner and I’d like to introduce my colleagues from the State Department Ms. Alina Romanowski. Thank you very much, Folks.

A salaam alykum. Thank you, Stuart, for that very kind introduction. It is a real honor for me to be here in Egypt, a land of artistic and literary inspiration to announce this new cultural initiative, the Big Read Egypt-U.S. It is quite fitting that we chose the Cairo International Book Fair, one of the largest book fairs in the world, to launch a program that celebrates the freedom of the written word and honors the literary works of our two nations. This cultural initiative is a partnership between one of greatest cultural institutions, the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. State Department and also with the help of Arts Midwest to implement this program here in Egypt. This initiative came out of an inspiration and the strategy that was formulated by the First Lady Laura Bush in September 2006 under the Global Cultural Initiative where the U.S. State Department and our cultural institutions are working together to promote both U.S. arts and culture and literary works and partnership with countries around the world. By bringing Egypt into the Big Read that is going on in the United States, we will have an opportunity not only to share great American literature with Egyptian young people and adults but we will also have an opportunity to bring Egyptian great literature by Naguib Mafouz to American communities and through this exchange we hope that we will continue the dialogue that will strengthen a long standing friendship between our two countries. I think it is also important to recognize that your First Lady, Mrs. Mubarak, has also placed considerable emphasis on literature here in Egypt and we would like to share that experience and her commitment and demonstrate that that too is our commitment in the United States. I also want to thank our Egyptian partners, our publishers and the other partners in Egypt that we will be working with including the Biblioteca in Alexandria to support this program.
And now what I would like to do is introduce our partner and projects originator, the renowned Poet and Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Dana Gioia. His leadership has moved the National Endowment for the Arts back to its rightful place within our nation, which is a place where the arts are central to who and what we are. Because of Chairman Gioia’s vision countless communities in the United States are reading great literature and are gaining a deeper understanding of our nation’s literary legacy. And now through his vision, also through the Big Read U.S.-Egypt, communities in other parts of the world and in Egypt will be part of a phenomena that brings readers together. Chairman Gioia’s schedule is very busy and we are very pleased that he would make time to come here to Egypt and to launch the Big Read. And now I would like to introduce Chairman Dana Gioia of the National Endowment of the Arts.

Good afternoon. It is a great pleasure to be here surrounded by books in one of the largest book festivals in the world. I don’t think there could be a better place to make this historic beginning of cultural conversation between Egypt and the United States. When great nations talk to each other, too often they talk about politics or money. There are other kinds of conversations that nations and human beings can have, literature being one of those. What we’re beginning today is an exchange between the literary classics of the United States and Egypt. And we are very excited about bringing Naguib Mafouz’s work to the United States, which will be read in cities as large as New York City to fairly rural cities like Huntsville, Alabama. I want to thank Dar Shoroub and Dr. Moalam for sponsoring this and I want to give him a little gift. There is a very famous American novel, which is illustrated there by Ray Bradbury, called Farenheit 451. The title is the temperature at which paper burns. Celsius 252, I think, is the number. The book is internationally famous and it’s being translated into Arabic for the first time. But there’s an interesting fact, Ray Bradbury got the idea for this book when he read about the burning of the library in Alexandria. So what we like to think that we’re taking the book which began in Egypt and bringing it back to Egypt. And Mr. Bradbury has written a special introduction for the Egyptian reader, which we have here in English, in the special edition, which I want to offer with our gratitude to Dr. Moalam. Thank you so much.

نحن اليوم نطلق مبادرة "القراءة الكبري" الرائعة بمشاركة كل من حكومة الولايات المتحدة ودار الشروق للنشر من اجل جعل الكتب الأمريكية متاحة للقراء المصريين باللغة العربية. ونحن نأمل أنكم سوف تثمنون هذه الكتب وتسمتعون بقراءتها مثلما نفعل نحن الأمريكان. وفي الوقت ذاته ، نحن نعمل على جعل الكتب المصرية متاحة للقراء الاميركيين الذين بدورهم سوف يثمنون هذه المساهمه المهمة في عالم الثقافة. دكتور المعلم ، شكرا جزيلا لك على ما قمتم به لاحراز هذا النجاح. نحن يشرفنا ان نكون هنا اليوم. انا سوف أكون شريكك وإسمح لي أن أعطي الكلمة لزميلتي من وزارة الخارجية الامريكية السيدة ألينا رومانووسكي. شكرا جزيلا لكم.

السلام عليكم. شكرا لك يا ستيوارت على تلك المقدمة الرقيقه جدا. إنه حقيقة لشرف لي ان اكون هنا في مصر ، أرض الالهام الفني والأدبي ، لكي أقوم بالإعلان عن هذه المبادره الثقافية الجديدة , مبادرة قراءة أكثر بالتعاون بين الحكومتين المصرية والأمريكية. وقد جاء إختيار معرض القاهرة للكتاب، والذي يعد من اكبر معارض الكتاب في العالم، مناسبا جدا لاطلاق البرنامج الذي يمجد حرية الكلمه المكتوبة ويكرم الاعمال الأدبيه لبلدينا. تعد هذه المبادرة الثقافيه شراكة بين واحدة من اكبر المؤسسات الثقافيه وهي المؤسسة الوطنية للمنح الأدبية والفنون ووزارة الخارجية الاميركية بالإضافة إلى مؤسسة آرتس ميد ويست (فنون الغرب الأوسط) التي تساعد على تنفيذ هذا البرنامج هنا في مصر.
تأتي هذه المبادرة كنتيجة للإستراتيجية التي وضعتها السيدة الاولى لورا بوش في شهر سبتمبرعام 2006 في اطار مبادرة الثقافة العالمية حيث تعمل وزارة الخارجية الاميركية مع المؤسسات الثقافيه الأمريكية من اجل الإرتقاء بالثقافة والفنون والاعمال الادبيه الأمريكية والشراكه مع البلدان في جميع انحاء العالم. وبضم مصر لتلك المبادرة المعمول بها في الولايات المتحدة لن تتاح لنا فرصة مشاركة الأدب الأميركي مع الشباب والبالغين المصريين فقط ولكن ايضا ستجعل أدب نجيب محفوظ المصري العظيم متوفر في المجتمعات الامريكية. ومن خلال ذلك التبادل الثقافي نأمل ان يستمر الحوار الذي سيعزز الصداقه المستمرة بين بلدينا. واعتقد انه من المهم ايضا القول أن سيدة مصر الأولى ، السيدة سوزان مبارك ، كانت قد أكدت بقوة على الأدب في مصر. ونحن نود ان نشاركها تلك التجربه والتزامها ونبرهن ان هذا ما نلتزم به نحن أيضا في الولايات المتحدة. وأود ان اشكر شركاءنا المصريين الناشرين وغيرهم الذين سوف نتعاون معهم بما فيهم مكتبة الاسكندرية لدعمهم لهذا البرنامج.
والآن أود أن أقدم شريكنا وصاحب المشروع ، الشاعر المعروف ورئيس المؤسسة الوطنية للمنح الأدبية والفنون، دانا جويا، الذي ساهمت قيادته بوضع المؤسسة الوطنية للمنح الأدبية والفنون في المكان الصحيح في الولايات المتحدة ، وهو المكان الذي تلعب فيه الفنون دورا رئيسيا في تكوين هويتنا. فبفضل رؤية السيد جويا ، هناك الآن عدد لا يحصى من المجتمعات في الولايات المتحدة مهتمة بقراءة الأعمال الأدبية، وقد إكتسبت بالفعل فهما أعمق للتراث الأدبي للولايات المتحدة. والآن من خلال رؤيته وفي إطار هذه المبادرة ستصبح المجتمعات في أجزاء أخرى من العالم ومصر جزءا من ظواهر الجمع بين القراء. جدول اعمال السيد جويا مزدحم للغاية ونحن سعداء جدا بانه أتاح لنا وقتا للمجيء الى مصر لإطلاق هذه المبادرة. والآن أود ان أترك الكلمة لدانا جويا رئيس المؤسسة للمنح الأدبية والفنون.

مساء الخير. انه لشرف عظيم ان أكون هنا محاطا بالكتب في واحدة من أكبر مهرجانات الكتاب في العالم. ولا أظن ان هناك مكانا افضل لإطلاق هذه البداية التاريخية للحوار الثقافي بين مصر والولايات المتحدة. عندما تتحدث الأمم العظيمة مع بعضها البعض فإنهم غالبا ما يتحدثون عن السياسة او المال. وهناك أنواع أخرى من المحادثات التي يمكن أن تكون بين الأمم والبشر ، والأدب يعد واحدة من تلك المحادثات. ما نحن اليوم بصدده هو بداية عملية تبادل أدب كلاسيكي بين الولايات المتحدة ومصر. ونحن متشوقون جدا لجلب أعمال نجيب محفوظ الأدبية إلى الولايات المتحدة. هذه الأعمال سوف يتم قراءتها في كل من المدن الكبيرة مثل مدينة نيويورك والقرى الريفيه الصغيرة مثل قرية هانتسفيل بولاية ألاباما. أود أن اشكر دار الشروق والدكتور المعلم لرعايتهما لهذه المبادرة وأود ان أقدم له هدية صغيرة.
ثمة رواية اميركية شهيرة جدا عنوانها فهرنهايت 451 وهي للكاتب راي برادبري. العنوان يدل على درجة الحراره التي تكفى لحرق ورقة ، وهي تعادل 252 مئوية كما اعتقد. الرواية مشهورة جدا على مستوى العالم ويجرى حاليا ترجمتها الى العربية لأول مرة. ولكن هناك حقيقة مثيرة للاهتمام ، وهي أن راي برادبري حصل على فكرة هذه الرواية عندما قرأ عن حريق مكتبة الاسكندرية. فنحن نريد أن نفكر بطريقة أننا نقوم بإعادة الرواية مرة اخرى الى مصر حيث بدأت. وقد كتب برادبري مقدمة خاصة للقارئ المصري ، وأنا أود أن أهدي هذه المقدمة في طبعتها الخاصة باللغة الانجليزيه للدكتور المعلم. شكرا جزيلا لك.
