Education: Improving basic education

Total assistance, 1975-2004: $846.8 million
Budgeted for FY 2005: $64.3 million

USAID activities focus on developing and implementing effective models of formal and non-formal education delivery in poor communities, in both urban and rural settings, in targeted communities in seven governorates namely, Alexandria, Cairo, Fayoum, Beni Suef, Minya, Qena and Aswan. Special emphasis is placed on girls’ education. The program addresses education reform, with community mobilization and capacity building at the local level.

The program supports capacity building for central institutions responsible for policy, delegation of authority, improved standards, teacher training and materials development.

Information technology systems presently being tested in select public and private schools will be expanded to poorer and more rural schools. School-to-Work systems will be developed for schools in targeted communities in the seven governorates.

USAID supports as well projects and scholarships with the American University in Cairo and tourism training in collaboration with the Egyptian Tourism Federation. Various supplementary materials-such

as the over half a million books for fourth and fifth graders already distributed in Alexandria Governorate -will be made available to thousands of students.
