All intending immigrants except for Diversity Visa candidates must have a petition filed on their behalf. The Consular Section’s processing responsibilities for a given immigrant visa application depend on where the petition is filed.
All petitions may be filed in the United States with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services.
In some cases, petitions for spouses, parents, and children of American citizens may also be filed in Cairo with the Consular Section. Please read Filing a Petition in Cairo page for the Consular Section’s policy for accepting petitions.
In some cases, an applicant may be refused. If an applicant is refused and feels that he/she did not provide all relevant information during the interview, the applicant may submit that information and request reconsideration. We may then review that information and reconsider the decision. A request for reconsideration, however, does not guarantee further review
